Shemini Azeres and Simchas Torah

Gut voch everyone, and, in anticipation of tonight- gut yontiff!

I posted candle lighting times in my post, Good Shabbos, so make sure you check them out, or if you’re outside London, take a look at’s webpage or app. Shemini Azeres, which starts tonight, is a joyous day, but as well as containing the prayer for rain, the morning services contain the yizkor prayer for departed parents. Simchas Torah, which starts Monday night, is an all-out celebration marked by dancing with the Torah (which we don’t read, to show that the Torah is every Jew’s inheritance), eating and drinking, and spending time in good company. Then, the Torah reading cycle begins anew! I’m considering giving Simchas Torah morning services a go, though I don’t really feel up to it. What are you doing to mark the yontiff?
